The TV guide said that QPR the four year plan was worth staying up for on Sunday night. I am not really a stay up later person (nor a football fan for that matter) but this one looked interesting so I watched it on iplayer last night.

I am not sure on the circumstances of the “start” of the four year plan. However, according to the great oracle wikipedia, QPR have had a number of years of financial difficulties which were seemingly “ended” when a consortium took over the club in 2007 and covered the debts.

So what is in “QPR The four year plan”

The film, funded by the new owners - followed the events of the club in the period from when they took over to promotion to the FA Premier League in 2011.

QPR the four year plan was almost comedic – at least in the first half. Going through a string of managers – the controlling owner Flavio Briatore looked almost despotic in his management style.

20 years ago, a slightly eccentric millionaire with some money and time to spend would buy or hire a yacht and some nice ladies to umm “crew” it, sale around the world and no one would think anything of it.

Now, they go and buy a football club and umm “run” that.

Sat an empty ground watching a reserve team player miss an open goal

“He did that on purpose – he bloody did that on purpose” he rants.

With no voice over “QPR – The four year plan” seemed to be almost arty in it’s approach rather than “fly on the wall” or “reality tv” in it’s approach.

It seemed strange at a board meeting to be discussing spending £500 on flowers (per match) for the sponsors boxes and then discussing who could be bought and sold for upwards of £2 million. (Players that it not sponsors).

The management team was a strange mix of Italians and Indians and I am not really sure what motivation either group has for working with a middle ranking english football club.

Not sure either WHY you would fund a film about yourself (it featured playing staff and supporters very little) which is very likely to show yourself in a bad light?

I remember Nick Hewer (side kick of Lord Sugar) saying (about being in charge of Spurs) “The best it will ever be is that no one is shouting at you”

So QPR The four year plan – worth watching ?

Yes BUT the worrying thing is – Is that (presumably) these guys – the type of million/billionaires (generally speaking) have more money than most of us but yet they still behave in such an oafish aggressive.

Two things are taken as given for this post.

Firstly, the internet is not just a bolt on to live anymore, it IS life. Fast, always on connections are like water, electric and heating. It’s pretty hard to life without them.

Secondly, unfortunately, swearing and bad language are also part of life. Part fuelled by out of control footballers, part by “gritty” programs on TV.

However, just because swearing is part of life, I don’t need to condone it, I just stay away from it.

Anyways, we were recently playing “Pro cycling manager” at home. Yes, it’s like “football manager” games but… cycling.

One of my sons favourite cyclists is the German Jens Voigt. We were googling around looking for Jens Voigt related sites. We found the Jens Voigt soundboard which made my son laugh out loud. (Go on try it…)

BUT the site contains swearing.

Dilemma – Do I show my sons? Do they miss out on something to show their mates. Does showing it somehow condone swearing online but remain holier than thou…

Solution – Tell him to make sure the sound is turned down and “don’t let your mum see”

With High School now well in full swing for our youngest son – the “F” word cropped up the other day.
“Dad when can I be on facebook” he asked.

Reasons given were twofold

“There are lots of cool games on there” and
“All my friends are on there”

I am not sure he knows EXACTLY what he is going to do on there. Facebook doesn’t have the monopoly on cool games online and I would prefer to wait till he is more than 11 before he spills out his entire personal details online for everyone to see forever. (You see “terms of service” don’t really mean much when “all your mates are on”)

His impending presence led me to think about facebook because having your Dad as a facebook friend isn’t going to be seen as very cool. In fact, having your Dad anywhere near you when you are 11 isn’t very cool.

So I will be trying to make a tactical withdrawal from facebook over the medium term.

Anyways, as far as the young chap is concerned, I have the following plan of action.

He doesn’t actually use his real name – Only a combination of his first and middle names.

His photo is bogus

I personally set his privacy settings (which are likely to be high)

(Probably breaching facebook terms of service) NO personally identifiable information will be available on his profile.

I know his password

His account will be closed (by me) for any breaches of the above.

Not sure if I have missed anything but if anyone has any experience of siblings on facebook, I would appreciate a comment.

Maybe this is overkill – but his learning curve at the moment should be taking the right PE kit to school on the right day, making sure his geography homework is done and has he told his mum that he needs some raw materials for food studies rather than Mafia wars and farm whatsits.

I am honoured (and yes that IS spelled correctly..) to be asked by De to work with you guys to help you move your businesses forward.

I mean, come on, it’s a match made on heaven isn’t it?, a 40 something British guy working with American professional women.

Anyways – by way of background, this is my personal blog – so it’s the most appropriate place to put a.. personal letter.

You can also find over 200 indexed blog posts on www.sharp-end-training.co.uk and find what I have been doing gathering an international team together at www.sharp-end-training.info/about

I look forward to working with De and Bea (they gotta be a double act – I will nickname them D and B…) and the remaining joint venture partners to develop and deliver training and educational material to help YOU.

One of the first things I will be doing to sending you a link to a comprehensive survey to find out more about you and your business. (I have never been to the US – but I will. So I need to understand a bit more about you all). Don’t worry though, thanks to the wonders of TV and the internet, I am exposed to american culture daily…

Anyways, if you want to speak and have a natter, chew the fat, whatever you want to call it, leave a comment below and I will add you on skype and we can fix up a time.

For general information, UK time (currently using GMT) is 5 hours AHEAD of eastern time and this means I talk to you guys afternoon for me, morning for you..

This last few weeks or so, I have been applying for a British passport for our youngest son.

Now British passports are highly prized around the world. Whatever the rights and wrongs of all the political wranglings, Britain is still a powerful country and a British passport is key to a lot of things.

So how hard can it be to apply?

I mean, you just fill in a form, send a couple of photograph, pay some money and wait for postie to call around a couple of weeks later.

(As an aside, I wonder if there is a reprint of the form due because it talks about “bank officer” and “respected in the community” in the same breath.

However, I want to tell you something. It’s hard.

Ok the passport form is written in plain english and it has the little crystal mark badge thingy to say so.

BUT

In this new age online form filling in, we aren’t actually used to reading large chunks of text and then doing exactly as we are told.

Here are the basics of the deal.

You have to write in BLACK PEN. ONE CAPITAL LETTER PER BOX.

For those of us who scribble in pencil 99% of the time, this is a challenge in itself.

You have to FOLLOW the exact rules.

Any mistake, ANY MISTAKE and you are OUT.

Why would you spell your own name and address wrong?

We write our basic contact details so often, we do it without thinking.

So how many forms did I go through?

First form, I put my relationship to my son as “BRITISH”

Second form, I wrote my wife’s maiden name when we have been married for 18+years.

WHY? (no not why are we married?)

Because the “name of the mother” came right after the “date of marriage box”

Third form, Filled in my sons details and and our countersignatory to confirm that he has known my son for 11 years. In actual fact, because I am the applicant – it should confirm he has known ME.

Anyways, we finally did it, on the fourth form. And yes I am bad at filling in forms or has anyone else had this problem?

Service not included

Just recently I seem to have found myself on the mailing list of seven high profile executive conference organisations. These events usually take place in London, are expensive (£500+ per day) and they usually feature one or more of the following:

Keynote speaker from Channel 4, the Guardian or the Observer. If these are not available then it is the woman who talks about Youth offenders on BBC news 24.

The events themselves seem to be self serving.

The title will be wide-ranging and sufficiently woolly, as to not accurately describe what it is about (just like the title of this post)
The event will feature group discussions and workshops on pressing issues of the time.
The literature also advertises ample opportunities for networking. This is the equivalent of going somewhere with your children which claims to have facilities such as ‘picnic area and shop’ and finding a field with an Ice cream van in it.

Feeling a little mischievous one day, I rang the “hotline” The conversation went something like this

Me – “Is the networking at your event structured at all?”

Hotline – “Pardon”

Me – “Is the networking at your event structured in anyway at all. Do you or can you organise who I will meet?

Hotline – “mmm I don’t think so”

Me – “So, I just wander around and meet whoever I can then?”

Hotline – “Yes I think so”

This is not good enough. Having no idea who the delegates will be and when or if you will meet them, the event costing £500 is in fact a very expensive lottery ticket.

The internet and free and cheap tools mans that I can take a telescopic view of who I need to speak to.

What about you?

Have you ever been to such an event? Was the networking structured? Did you learn anything?

I was talking to my friend Emma Fryer (www.answer-It.co.uk) the other day about working from a mobile phone and the problems associated with that like missed calls etc.

As a professional answering company – the deal is far as Emma is concerned is for say Fred the roofer won’t answer many calls on his mobile phone if he is on someone’s roof doing a job. Missed call = possible missed sale. Problem.

For me the problem of working from a phone is one of trust.

Over the years, there have been many stories about ‘White van man’ – you know the one about booking someone to do a job let’s say. wallpapering and ‘white van man’ turns up asking for cash and giving only a mobile phone number.

His van is umm white, unmarked and you have no way of tracing him.

He does the job (generally badly) and leaves.

Fast forward a few years and I can see endless ‘virtual’ white van men online mainly consultants, coaches, financial advisers, trainers people trying to build trust and credibility – with no other way of contacting them other than a gmail account and a mobile phone number.

This screams out to me that they are a sole business working from a kitchen table.

Will they still be there tomorrow? Maybe, maybe not. Will they answer my call? or are they on another job.

Trust in a virtual world is very hard to earn and easy to trash and they haven’t given themselves a very good start.

Phone numbers beginning 0800 and 0845 are also part of this issue of trust.

Yes they are not mobile numbers but (and there are likely to be telecom resellers out there moaning that statistics show more people are likely to ring these and leave a message and blah blah) but I know from personal experience that these numbers can be diverted to a mobile number (which can of course be turned off) making them no better than the above in gaining trust.

If you have a cold, hard look at your contact page on your website – do you look like a virtual ‘white van man’?

If you do – why not give Emma a call today. www.answer-it.co.uk
